Physics based modeling and simulation

"... physics based modeling for engineering analysis, trade studies, requirements definition, and simulation in applied physics, optics, engineering, energy ..."

What is a physics based model or simulation?

  • define the system
    • what do I already know about the system?
    • what do I want to know about the system?
    • what level of fidelity do I need?
      • lower order
      • higher order
  • understand the physics governing the system
    • what observations and data do I already have?
    • what laws of physics (first principles) affect the system?
    • are there simplifying assumptions? when are they valid?
      • develop mathematical algorithms describing the physics
      • write computer model for the system

What is a physics based model or simulation used for?

  • used to describe interaction of complex systems
  • show feasibility of a concept
  • make predictions of system performance
  • flow of requirements (up or down)
  • conduct trade studies between competing systems or components
